This book is unique in Quaker literature: a collection of scholarly articles, with extensive citation of research literature, intending to provide (I quote from the back cover) “comprehensive coverage of the history, theology, and sociology of Quakerism,” “reflecting the international vibrancy of the movement today.” Convincement. His convincement and conversion happen in one moment: a three-page passage full of the vivid pyrotechnics of an inner apocalypse, a continuous string of more than thirty separate references to scripture, at least twenty-five them apocalyptic passages such as M Jeremiah, or Isaiah, and eighteen from the book of Revelation.

The comprehensive citations in the book underscore how much research the author undertook to produce this impressive book. Refreshingly, Murphy is just as quick to tell you what the record doesn’t show: a key example is his noting that the exact circumstances and timing of Penn’s convincement—his conversion to Quakerism—aren’t known. This is an important book for its contents, but it is also to be highly commended for the depth of its research, how well it is written and its accessibility.' Religious Studies Review, () 'a thoroughly enjoyable book, one that should be of use to scholars of Quakerism and of early modern religion and radicalism more generally.'.

Formerly the Quaker Studies teacher at Pendle Hill, a well-traveled Friend, Doug has worked for the American Friends Service Committee, served among Friends as a pastor, and taught at the Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre in Birmingham, England, as well as at Pendle Hill. Doug is a student of the Bible and of early Quakerism. Quakers, also called Friends, are a historically Christian denomination whose formal name is the Religious Society of Friends or Friends Church. Members of the various Quaker movements are all generally united by their belief in the ability of each human being to experientially access the light within, or "that of God in every one".. Some profess the priesthood of all believers, a doctrine.
